House of Sim-Oi-Ghets is a First Nation owned and operated arts and crafts gift store, located next to Highway 16 West, in Kitsumkalum. House of Sim-Oi-Ghets offers local First Nations gifts and one of a kind souvenirs that can’t be found anywhere else. Customers will discover a wide variety of First Nation designed clothing such as scarves, shawls, hats, ties, dresses, shirts, sweaters, hoodies and T-shirts. The House of Sim-Oi-Ghets is an authorized dealer of beautiful and functional Manitobah Mukluks and a distributor of locally designed First Nations apparel.

The store also has cedar bark hats, cedar baskets, drums, hand-carved silver jewellery, hand-carved masks, paddles, plaques, framed prints and photographs. Shop local and receive friendly service and find traditional and contemporary First Nations arts and crafts. The Kitsumkalum community believes in giving back to their community as well as Terrace and surrounding area. House of Sim-Oi-Ghets contributes to numerous local events in Kitsumkalum and in Terrace such as prizes for the Terrace Youth Hockey Tournament, Rotary Club of Terrace, Terrace Business Expo, first Terrace newborn of the year, the annual Kitsumkalum Christmas and Halloween parties and they proudly contribute to the Kitsumkalum Events Committee who hosts the Riverboat Days Annual Salmon barbecue.

Kitsumkalum, a Galts’ap (community) of the Tsimshian Nation operates the community-owned business, House of Sim-Oi-Ghets. Since 1971 the local store has been successfully supporting local First Nation artists and crafters by featuring their traditional and modern arts and crafts for sale in their store. The House of Sim-Oi-Ghets is managed by James Bohn.

James enjoys operating House of Sim-Oi-Ghets. He is most proud of the staff’s positive and meaningful relationship with their local artists and customers. The store offers a place to display, promote and sell their traditional and modern arts. House of Sim-Oi-Ghets, “allows others to excel and continue to move on and up through the training and educational supports we are able to offer,” explained James.

Recent renovations have taken place to improve displays, customer experience and sales. James loves working in an environment that continuously improves. “This continuous learning journey allows us to overcome barriers, stay current and continue to reach our customers by delivering an enjoyable experience and great local products in a dynamic market,” said James.
James loves living and working in Terrace, where there is a wide variety of small businesses. He has noticed an increased effort to build up services that support successful events in Terrace and a willingness to build meaningful relationships.
