Midway Service
The historic and original Midway Service harkens back to the days when the service station was the centre of the small town’s social life. Telkwa residents still enjoy gathering at the Midway Service to fill up and swap stories. Guests can fill up at the service station where they’ll find old-fashioned service, the likes of which have all but disappeared. A visit to Midway Service is more than a service stop…. it’s an experience.
Midway Service was the recipient of the Smithers District Chamber of Commerce Village of Telkwa Business Leadership Award for 2012.
Meet Leroy & Patricia Dekens
Meet Leroy & Patricia Dekens
Leroy and Patricia Dekens are proud to own and operate one of Telkwa's oldest and most historic businesses. Patricia's parents, Oepie and Grace Hartman, started Midway Service in 1977, and it has been family-owned and operated ever since. Leroy and Patricia became partners in the business in 1992, and then took over when Oepie and Grace retired.
Having been a part of the business for so long, the Dekens have a pulse on local culture, know all the locals, and have met thousands of travellers over the decades. Knowing people, says Patricia, is part of the fun of the job. Living and working in Telkwa for so long, "you know your customers, they are your neighbours." She adds that there are strong community bonds in Telkwa, whether you've lived here for decades as they have or you're a newcomer. They add that people here are always willing to pitch in and help others in need regardless of their own circumstances.
The Dekens originally purchased their business out of a desire to live in the town that they loved and provide a good, financially-stable life for their family. They're happy they've been able to do that over the years and look forward to many more years serving residents and visitors.
