Meet Matt Simmons
Matt loves living and working in small town Smithers. "Small towns are places where connecting with the community is part of daily life," said Matt. “Anonymity doesn’t exist here, and that’s a good thing.” Smithers has a vibrant arts and culture scene and Matt appreciates how there is always something going on throughout the year - events in music, art, theatre and literature. "It's a smorgasbord of creativity," said Matt. The beautiful outdoor playground right at his doorstep is a significant bonus. He likes to explore the trails around town and ride bikes, snowshoe, snowboard, paint, build things, read, write, play music and spend time with his family. "This is my home," said Matt, "so this is where I'm going to do business."
Matt recently took over as owner and editor of Northword Magazine. "I feel proud to be the one taking on the legacy of this magazine that has been around since 2004," he said. Matt started writing professionally many years ago and loves the freedom of working for himself and determining his own schedule. "It can be a struggle sometimes but I wouldn't trade it for anything," he said. Matt feels positive about his magazine business and the future of small businesses in Smithers. He points to the positive shift in town towards younger entrepreneurs jumping in and keeping the town vibrant.
