Meet Beverly Cowpar & Harry Peerless

Beverly and Harry love their home. "Beverly and I both grew up on Haida Gwaii and there is nowhere else we'd rather be," said Harry. They like to travel but always appreciate coming home to their island. The couple enjoys living in Daajing Giids where everyone is friendly and nothing is ever a far walk or drive away. Beverly and Harry love the ocean, the forest and the mountains and are often adventuring outside fishing, camping, hunting, paddle boarding and hiking. They enjoy living close to family and say "there are lots of Cowpars and Peerlesses around."

Beverly and Harry recently took over the Hecate Inn from longtime owner Albert. "We are very proud we took the risk of buying a business while in our twenties, so we will have many years to work on it," said Beverly. "We feel that since we are young, we want to work very hard to go above expectations with cleanliness, upkeep, flowers and customer service."

As local business owners, the couple acknowledges that Daajing Giids and area are lucky to have active entrepreneurial support from organizations such as Gwaii Trust and Community Futures. "They help locals with business plans and finances to keep business owners local," they explained. Both Beverly and Harry like operating their own business in Daajing Giids because they get to work and live in a place they love. They are both also pleased that they have year-round work at the Hecate Inn and hope to put the hard work in now while they are young and reap the rewards later in life.

Harry and Beverly like the small town connections on Haida Gwaii and throughout the region. They have sought out business advice from other small business owners and accommodation operators and received valuable guidance. "We have learned how their businesses are run, different policies and we've developed partnerships to recommend customers to each others' businesses when we or they are full," said Beverly. They are pleased with the positive network of small businesses in the area and recommends Jags Beanstalk for the best coffee and breakfast on Haida Gwaii and of course, for the magnificent view of Skidegate Inlet.
