Meet Gitmaxmak'ay Nisga'a Society

If you've been around for awhile, you might remember the days when retailers would help you carry your bags out to your car. For the most part, those days are long gone... unless you're shopping at Rupert Lawn & Garden. "Where else do staff carry out your bags to the car for you every time?" asks Blair Mirau, Economic Development Officer at the Gitmaxmak'ay Nisga'a Society. It is just one small part of the commitment made to local shoppers and gardening enthusiasts when the Gitmaxmak'ay Nisga'a Society took over the business in 2013. First established as Azalea Gardens in 1991, the staff at Rupert Lawn & Garden are proud to continue delivering high-quality greenery and gardening services to the community.

The Gitmaxmak’ay Nisga’a Society is a non-profit First Nations organization delivering programs and services to Nisga’a citizens in Prince Rupert/Port Edward area on behalf of Nisga’a Lisims Government. The mission of the Society is to enhance the well-being of Nisga’a citizens living in Prince Rupert and Port Edward. Profits generated from Rupert Lawn & Garden helps to fund the society and its many programs while meeting an important need of the community-at-large for access to gardening products and services.

For the society and the staff at the shop, excellent customer service is one of the most important components of operating a successful and sustainable business, particularly in a small community. "Everyone knows each other," says Blair, and "word of mouth advertising is everything." Staff know that attentive service that goes above and beyond, plus high-quality products are what builds repeat business.

One of the advantages of everyone knowing everyone else, says Blair, is that people are very quick to help when there is a need or a crisis in the community. "Rupertites all come together when it means the most." This spirit of camaraderie, plus the incredible natural beauty and abundance of resources make Prince Rupert an ideal place to live, work and play.
