Meet Christy Allen

Visitors to Prince Rupert can't help but notice the Pioneer Guesthouse. The century-old, heritage-style building is beautifully-designed and decorated to fit with the fishing and mariner-style atmosphere of Prince Rupert's Cow Bay District. Owner Christy Allen always gets a little kick out of seeing tourists pull out their smart phones and cameras to snap pictures of the house.

The building has served in various capacities throughout the decades. Christy saw big potential in the building as one that would convert perfectly into a budget backpackers tourist accommodations. She has owned it since 2001 and is proud of its international reputation as a quality place to stay in Prince Rupert. Not only does Christy have the privilege of operating a business that has so much local history, she gets to be her own boss. She is grateful every day for the opportunity to set her own goals. Being able to take coffee breaks whenever she wants is also a nice side benefit. "With three ferry routes, the VIA Rail train, Greyhound bus and our airport, it has proven to be a thriving business," says Christy.

Christy grew up in Prince Rupert so it was a natural place for her to establish a business. She already knew the community and had a pulse on the local business scene. She believes Prince Rupert is a place that has much going for it in spite of some of the challenges it has faced in recent decades. It has magnificent scenery with access to all kinds of nature and beautiful public spaces like the Sunken Gardens. It is filled with friendly people who are involved in and committed to the community and that makes all the difference in the world.
