Indigo Mountain Studio
Indigo Mountain Studio owner and artist Debra Strand creates original fibre art. A nature-lover, she draws inspiration for many of her works from the natural environment around her Prince Rupert home. Debra incorporates many traditional techniques into her original pieces. Her work ranges from functional quilted pieces like fabric bowls, messenger bags and coin purses to wall hangings and art quilts. Debra began sewing in high school, eventually designing and sewing her own clothing. Later she learned the art of fabric dying. Her love for fibre arts drove her to pursue quilting, and it is there that she found her artistic voice. Debra has participated in numerous art shows, and photos of her work can be viewed on her website.

Relationships characterize small towns, both in and outside of work. It is one of the things that Debra Strand most appreciates about the local businesses she patronizes as well as her own art business. Relationships with clients and customers "extend beyond the exchange of money for goods or services," says Debra. In a small town like Prince Rupert, your customers are your neighbours and friends and, this makes doing any kind of business much more meaningful and personal.
Debra has lived in Prince Rupert for most of her life. "It truly is home," she says, and now she is raising her own family here. Debra has always had an artsy side, and she was particularly drawn to fibre art. Says Debra, being creative "feeds my soul." She began participating in art shows as a way to share her work with others. She soon realized she wanted to get more exposure for her artwork so she started her own art studio. The studio is both a creative endeavor as well as a means of supplementing the family's income. It has provided her with the opportunity to work at home and be available to her children during their growing years.
Debra and her family are nature enthusiasts who try to spend as much time as they can outdoors. She especially appreciates the quality nature trails, particularly some of the lesser known ones, which provide up close views of the region's rain forests.
