Meet Urs Schildknecht

Meet Urs Schildknecht

Urs, the founder and operator of Liard Tours, has had a passion for airplanes since an early age. After obtaining his commercial pilot’s licence in Switzerland, his first job took him to Libya to fly a Pilatus Turbo Porter in the oilfields of North Africa. This taught him a great deal about operating airplanes in harsh climates and allowed the Schildknechts to save money to start their own air charter business on April Fool’s Day 1981 in Fort Liard, NWT. After successfully operating this Air Charter business for 5 years and getting to know many of the great fly-in fishing lakes in the area, Marianne and Urs decided to diversify and expand their business.

They found the Highland Glen Lodge on Muncho Lake as an ideal location (Mile 462 Alaska Highway). In 1996 with the completion of the Northern Rockies Lodge, the Schildknechts had firmly made their foothold at Muncho lake for both the hotel and tour operation. This unique property would make an ideal base for their modern fleet of turbine-powered floatplanes to continue flying into the Nahanni and to access the fish and game rich Northern Rocky Mountains.

The Schildknechts love Muncho lake and the Northern Rockies. They have many friends and social contacts in the Fort Nelson area. In their free-time, they like to go out into the Mountains for hikes, river adventures and wildlife viewing.
