Accommodations and Tours-Arts-Souvenirs

Alistair Anderson is a realist painter who loves the play of light and shadow on the form. He loves human and other animal movement and gesture. He tries in his art to hold an otherwise fleeting moment for the viewer’s contemplation. He feels his work is successful when it fascinates and invites reverie.

Anderson works in various sizes and in various media, including oil, acrylic, pencil and coloured pencil as well as pen and ink. Some of Anderson’s works are available at Dragonfly Studio from time to time.

Studio visits are available by appointment by contacting Anderson via email.

Meet Alistair Anderson

Anderson lives in Hagensborg, and has made the Bella Coola Valley his home for more than 2 1/2 decades. In the Valley “the air is pure, the scenery is gorgeous, it’s generally quiet and peaceful, most day to day needs are close to hand, and the people are congenial," said Anderson.

Anderson and his wife moved to Bella Coola from Calgary to practice medicine. Before medicine, he spent a few years at art school and the pull of art remained strong. He illustrated several books for Harbour Publishing and took a year off from his practice to paint for a show in Williams Lake. "I've always had this dual nature, drawn to both art and medicine," he said, and now that he is retired, he has built a studio with good light, ample room to move around in and the space to leave things set up.

His favourite place to be in the Valley is his studio, but he occasionally goes out to enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat at Little Nook Café or Dragonfly Studio (like several other Valley businesses, both are good sources for gifts).

Anderson is a member of the Bella Coola Valley Arts Council Board and supports various other community groups by attending their events, including ones like the Music Festival, where his wife makes him dance.

When he’s not working, he likes to read.
