Meet Merrietta Skold

For an artistic and creative person like Merrietta Skold, Granisle is a perfect place to live and work. She finds the varied and beautiful natural surroundings inspiring and peaceful. For those who come to visit, it is a place of healing and rest, not far from services or destinations like Alaska or the North Coast, and with access to endless outdoor recreational activities all year-round. It is the ideal place for city people to find peace and quiet.

Whatever subject Merrietta is teaching, she always thinks outside the box. "There is always more than one way of doing things," she says. It was a lesson she learned early in life and always carried with her. She credits this tenacity and entrepreneurial spirit to her father. He was an entrepreneur, and his philosophy was "if you can't find what you need you create something." She encourages all of her learners to embrace these ideas as they create art, cook or immerse themselves in nature. It might mean putting certain fabrics together that most people wouldn't think go together to create something that stands out. It might mean trying a new art form. "Some people have been discouraged from being creative, so to show someone that they can be creative and valued is wonderful," Merrietta says.

When Merrietta isn't teaching others, she likes to engage in art projects herself, like painting. She also loves to sing and perform. You might also find her outdoors gathering wild food or even going hunting.
