Imperative Recycling
Katrina Slortstad, owner of Imperative Recycling has a favourite quote: “Nothing changes if nothing changes.” This embodies the amazing job this local business is doing by providing a service that allows for proper waste management through recycling. Imperative Recycling is a curbside recycling program for residential and commercial Fort St. James. Recycling conserves our natural resources, saves landfill space, conserves energy, and reduces water pollution, air pollution and the greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming.
Katrina’s sister, Shara, also works in the business doing recycling pick-ups as well as some of the marketing and has been an a very integral part of the Imperative Recycling team, particularly while Katrina was on maternity leave. Katrina is thankful to be working with her sister and loves having her as part of the company.

Meet Katrina Slorstad
Born and raised in Fort St. James, Katrina Slorstad decided to start something new and beneficial for the community when she opened Imperative Recycling. After the birth of her first son, Merrik, she felt that she wanted to start her own business so she could be home more with her family and have the ability to create her own hours. Her passion for the environment and all things living, and her love of being an entrepreneur- the creativity of marketing and spreading knowledge about recycling, is what drives her to continue making Fort St. James' carbon footprint smaller.
In her spare time, Katrina enjoys learning about nutrition and Montessori, as well as cooking, baking and playing with her children. Charities and causes that Katrina and Imperative Recycling have donated their bottle return to include the Humane Society, the Fort St. James Library and David Hoy Elementary. Katrina is also on the board of The Greening Up Fort Society.
