Sue’s Hair Upstairs

Sue Bertrand has been a hair stylist for more than 35 years. However, it wasn't until a few years ago that she decided to venture out and open her own salon. Her cozy little studio is in her home, and her faithful clients love its casual warmth and intimate feel. Striking out on her own has been an overwhelmingly positive move in Sue's life and career.

Though there are always challenges when it comes to operating a small business, the rewards always balance them out. Because Sue is the sole operator and service provider in her business, there have been times when she's had to close her shop due to family emergencies. Working for herself has allowed her to do this, and her clients have always been incredibly understanding, accommodating and supportive. It also affords a great deal of flexibility, allowing her to work her schedule around things that are important to her, like spending time with her young grandsons. These are just a few of the many perks of self-employment that Sue appreciates.

More than anything else, though, what Sue really looks forward to about her job is the clients themselves. "I love my people!" Sue says. She takes a lot of pride in providing them with a wonderful experience and excellent service, starting with making them feel welcome and at home. When you do someone's hair, Sue notes, you spend a lot of up close time with them. Consequently, you really get to know them. Often they end up becoming friends. It makes her job satisfying and well worthwhile.
