Meet Dori Shankel

Dori Shankel has trained and practiced in various locations and clinical settings throughout the US and Canada. Yet nowhere has she felt more appreciated than in the BC north. "I find it very worthwhile to bring a health service to a small town where healthcare is not taken for granted and convenience of getting to a healthcare practitioner is definitely not taken for granted," she says. Prior to 2009 there had been no physiotherapist in Chetwynd. Locals who experienced an injury or accident and needed physiotherapy to recover had to travel to larger centres to access it. Now residents can get treatment in their own community. Because of this, they are always grateful for and receptive to treatment that eases their pain or improves their health and well-being.

Dori has always been a small town girl. She was born in a small town in Alberta. Later, as she pursued her education and work experience, she lived in various places, including cities. "I can honestly say I prefer the small town. Chetwynd, especially, is MY town," Dori says. She has always been drawn to its natural terrain with its beautiful foothills surrounded by mountains. As someone who enjoys staying active, there is much to do here. Dori participates in all kinds of different outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, biking and snowshoeing, and it's all right on her back doorstep.

Before opening her clinic, Dori had always worked for others. Starting her own business was never something she had considered before 2009. It was through the encouragement of friends and family, and knowing that there was a need in the community that she had the skills to fill, that she stepped out into the unknown of business ownership. "I am very glad that I did!" she says. She has enjoyed being able to work and treat clients according to her own philosophy of care, which is all about hands-on treatment and spending time listening to each client's needs. Plus, it has given her the flexibility to work around her children and their activities.
