Meet William, Robert & Douglas Rummel

Meet William, Robert & Douglas Rummel

The Rummel brothers have been a fixture within the Barkerville scene since 1980. It was that year that they first opened Mason and Daly General Merchants and C. Strouss and Company in the building that was a replica of the original. It had served several owners during Barkerville's heyday, including the Hudson's Bay Company. The current building replaced the original which burned down in the 1960's. Mason and Daly General Merchants and C. Strouss and Company were both modeled after the early versions of those businesses. Sixteen years later, the Rummels added A. McPherson Watchmaker and Jeweller in the same location adjacent to their other two shops.

The real A. McPherson built his building in 1868 and it housed the Bank of British North America until 1869. After this, A. McPherson, moved his own watchmaking business into the premises. However, he died just a year later of typhoid fever, never expecting his shop would be revived some 127 years later.

William, Robert and Douglas have worked hard at recreating the business to be as authentic and true to A. McPherson's shop, at least in decor and atmosphere. Watchmaking is a different kind of industry today than in McPherson's time, but the Rummels think he would be pleased and proud anyway. For them, it's all about the experience, and they strive to give Barkerville visitors an authentic one, all the while playfully engaging and educating them about life during the Cariboo gold rush.
