Meet Old Massett Village Council & Hiellen Longhouse Village Staff

The Old Massett Village Council had a long-held dream of building a village of traditional longhouses where visitors could come and stay and get a firsthand experience of Haida life. After years of planning, designing and securing funding, work finally began on the Hiellen Longhouse Village in 2012. Part of the Old Massett Village Council's goal for the project was to support the local economy, so almost all of the wood was milled right here on Haida Gwaii. The building was done by a local carpentry apprentice crew, local cabinet-makers and millers. All seven longhouses were built using local cedar, hemlock and spruce from a community owned mill called Haida Gwaii Forest Products. The Hiellen Longhouse Village is a collaborative effort to promote tourism and as well as Haida culture and is run entirely by the Old Massett Village Council.

Today guests can rent one of the traditional longhouses and enjoy the remote camping-style experience while staying in comfort. Guests get a small taste of the Haida lifestyle and culture while getting connected to nature. The sandy beachfront invites guests to play in and around the ocean, and guests can even dig for clams or fish for crab during the appropriate clamming and crabbing seasons. Licenses are available for purchase at various locations throughout the islands.
