Meet Carmene Charlton

After years of working for others, Margaret Condrotte decided she wanted to start working for herself. Having always enjoyed entertaining, she decided that a bed and breakfast would be the perfect business for her. She could not have asked for a more beautiful location for it. "The Tlell River is literally out our back door," she says of the five bedroom guest house she and her husband built themselves. Patrons can sit on the deck and see the river flow by, watch otters playing and eagles flying by and diving into the water. The setting is laid back, quiet and peaceful, much like Tlell and Haida Gwaii themselves. "It is unique and beautiful here," Margaret declares.

No two days are ever exactly the same for Margaret. Her guests come from all over the world. She has welcomed visitors from England, Switzerland, Australia, Scotland and Japan, as well as places all over Canada. Many of them are fishermen who come to fish the river and the ocean. Some are regulars who return every year (one particular group has been coming since she first opened in 1996). Some of her regulars have even become friends with whom she keeps in touch throughout the year. It makes her work both interesting and rewarding.

When she isn't busy taking care of her guests, she can sometimes be found taking care of the chickens and turkeys on her property or working in the yard. She also loves to go for walks on the beach.
