Meet Janice & Gord Shaben
There is evidence of Janice & Gord Shaben's business in just about every part of town, though most people don't even realize it. Since starting Silvertip Promotions & Signs in 1985, the couple has been behind the creation and installation of hundreds of local signs. It always gives them a little thrill when they see one while walking or driving around town. In fact, it's not just signs but t-shirts, bags and other items that regularly remind them of how supportive the community of Terrace has been of their business throughout the years.
Taking a walk around town is often more like a reunion than errands. That's because you can't help running into someone you know. That's the nature of small town living, and it adds a pleasant richness to life in Terrace. "People here are friendly," says Janice. "You feel like a real part of the community." Not only are the people amiable, adds Janice, but they are also incredibly generous, both with their time and their finances. "Terrace has some really great people that truly believe in the community and give back so much," she says. Without such wonderful community volunteers, "we wouldn't have great events like the Riverboat Days weekend, the Farmers Market, the arts and music scene and so much more."
Gord has long had a passion for helping businesses promote themselves and for making signs. There was a niche in the local market for such a business and it was for those reasons that he ultimately started the business thirty years ago. Janice had been looking for a new career direction and a professional challenge, so the change was one she welcomed too. The couple is proud that the business is still going strong thirty years later, even in spite of economic ups and downs and competition in the market. They are grateful to their loyal local customers for helping the business thrive.
