Meet Scott Walter

It takes a small town to truly appreciate how intricately important every single person is to the community as a whole, says Scott Walter, who first started Northern Vacuum and Sewing Centre in Terrace in 1999. “Everyone plays an important role to the whole of the community and region,” Scott states. From school children to business owners to civic leaders, it really takes the efforts of each member to make a community thrive, and Terrace is exceptional when it comes to community spirit. It helps that in a small town like Terrace it is easy to get to know people and neighbours, co-workers and shoppers quickly become friends and comrades. This, in turn, breeds a sense of responsibility to one another, and locals are always quick to help out when one of its own is in need.

When it comes to supporting its community and its local small independent business owners, says Scott, “people here just ‘get’ it. They are passionate about being a part of and supporting our region in their own ways.” While its people are its number one asset, Terrace also has some astounding natural scenery and climate to boast about. The rich geography, beautiful natural setting, the climate and stunning four seasons all combined with the fact that the world’s best people live here make for a full and desirable lifestyle.

Scott started his business with a desire to fill a niche in the local market. Thanks to the generous and ongoing support of the store’s many customers and his capable talented staff, which includes store manager Arjunna Miyagawa, the store has been able to thrive for more than 15 years. This is not to say that there haven’t been challenges along the way, but Scott is adamant that Terrace’s future is bright. He sees a particular resilience and strong dedication among locals and independent business owners. People here are inspired and motivated to make their community viable, and Scott believes that will go a long way in keeping Terrace a wonderful place to live, work and invest.
