Meet Glen Saunders
Meet Glen Saunders
Glen Saunders has a collaborative rather than a competitive mindset when it comes to business. He believes that working together makes everyone more successful when it comes to owning and operating a business in a small town like Terrace.
Incorporating this philosophy into the way he does business is part of what has helped Flying Fish grow from his first 850 square foot store - Kermode Trading, to growing to three communities and remaining viable and successful for almost three decades.
Flying Fish is one of a number of businesses that Glen operates. He owns Skeena Landing where Flying Fish is housed, a building complex that was once a rundown industrial complex. He built a team, started cleaning and reworking the property and restored and repurposed the old buildings.
From the ten room lodge, The Lodge at Skeena Landing and restaurant at the top of the property, to the large industrial warehouse in the middle which is home to Flying Fish and many other businesses, to the lower house converted into a cafe. "Skeena Landing has been a project ten years in the making and there is more still to do," says Glen.
Glen was an avid re-purposer long before the notion became mainstream. Recycling and repurposing his first building for Kermode Trading, followed by repurposing buildings in Prince Rupert’s Cow Bay area as well as in downtown Nanaimo, all contributing to the area and the fabric of the community.
Skeena Landing has become a destination for shoppers, visitors and travellers. Every business in the complex cross-advertises for each other, a strategy that has proven beneficial for everyone… businesses and customers as well as community members. Next time you are at Skeena Landing, be sure to stop by and say hello at all of our neighbouring businesses.
