C.O.B. Bike Shop

Apparel & Accessories-Sports & Recreation-Footwear

C.O.B. Bike Shop sprang naturally and easily from a strong and supportive biking community and culture that has existed for years in Smithers. C.O.B. stands for “Children of the Bluff” and refers to the group of local bikers that helped to build the bike trails on the Bluff in Smithers. Now the networks have expanded on the Bluff and beyond, and the Smithers Mountain Bike Association (SMBA), an extension of the “Children of the Bluff”, act as stewards of the trails. C.O.B. Bike Shop carries everything the avid biker (mountain and street cyclists alike) needs, from bicycles to parts and accessories and bicycle clothing. C.O.B. Bike Shop also offers a full, on-site bike repair shop with qualified and experienced bicycle mechanics. Most of all, C.O.B. Bike Shop is a place where local cyclists can drop in, hang out and exchange tips and information or just enjoy a cup of coffee together.

C.O.B. Bike Shop is a member of the Smithers Chamber of Commerce and was featured in the Small Business Roundtable Annual Report as one of BC’s small business success stories in 2012.

Meet Dave Percy and Gabrielle Newman

Meet Dave Percy and Gabrielle Newman

Dave Percy and Gabrielle Newman are bikers and had been a part of the local bike culture for years when they began dreaming of a place that would serve as a hub for the many local riders in Smithers. There was already an active, organized group of bikers who called themselves "Children of the Bluff." Its name reflected the group's early efforts to build bike trails on the Bluff which today attracts riders from Smithers and beyond. It seemed only natural to Dave and Gabrielle to create something that would not only serve the local biking community but would also be a way for the couple to support the group's and the sport's growth and development in the Bulkley Valley.

Dave and Gabrielle wholeheartedly embrace small-town living and believe that it has worked to the advantage of their business. "Because Smithers is a small community, we have the advantage of seeing our customers often and getting direct and timely feedback," says Gabrielle. "This feedback helps us keep our finger on the pulse of the community and to respond to the changing needs in more refined ways." It certainly makes day to day living easier, too. "You can get a lot done in a short time!" Gabrielle declares.

Perhaps its best characteristic, though, is that there is quick access to so many different types of outdoor recreation. Dave and Gabrielle naturally spend a lot of their free time biking. But they enjoy just about anything that gets them outside in nature and is grateful for the town's commitment to its natural environment and to outdoor enthusiasts of all types.
