Meet the Haida Heritage Centre Management Team
For years, members of the Skidegate Haida community dreamed of a place where all people would be able to come and learn about Haida culture. The dream became a reality in 2007 when the Skidegate Band Council opened the Haida Heritage Centre. The expansive facility houses a museum, longhouse-style performance amphitheatre, a carving house, a teaching centre and a cafe with a spectacular ocean view. The entire staff of the Haida Heritage Centre and the Skidegate Band Council is proud of the stunning facility and the opportunity it has given them to share their culture with the world.
The Haida Heritage Centre is open year round. Its management is overseen by Gwaalagaa Naay Corporation staff members and a small support staff, which includes several high school and university students during the summer months. Summer is always the centre's busiest time, and one of its highlights is always the Ḵay Anniversary celebration in mid-August. It is a day of festivities which includes a parade, Haida games and contests, traditional dancing, and demonstrations and exhibitions of all kinds.
