Meet Terry Tollestrup
Terry Tollestrup was a young adult living in Alberta when he came to visit a cousin on Haida Gwaii. It was supposed to be a two week vacation, but instead he never left. He found himself drawn to the community of Daajing Giids and the amazing people who lived there, accepted a job offer and has been an islander ever since.
Terry got a taste of entrepreneurship as a teenager living on his own and working his way through school. His landlord, an accountant, took him under his wing and showed Terry the many benefits to self-employment. Those early lessons stuck with him, and so it wasn't very long after moving to Haida Gwaii that Terry began investing in local businesses. Today he owns several, including Echo Bay Tool Rentals and the Echo Bay Lodge. Diversification and an ability to do many different things are key to making a life on Haida Gwaii, says Terry. "I have lots of irons in the fire!"
Terry's many business ventures don't leave him as much time as he wishes he had for leisure. But when he does manage to find some down time, he is big on getting outdoors and enjoying all of the amazing sights and beauties of nature that Haida Gwaii has to offer. Terry camps, kayaks and hikes whenever he can. He's also actively involved in the community and its many events.
