Meet Tanya Wood
"The downtown area of any city is where the life and vibrancy should be," says Tanya Wood. She appreciates the emerging trend in cities like Prince George to make their downtowns the centre of local business and culture, just like they used to be. It is fitting that her spa and boutique is located in a 1940's era heritage house, because she embraces the values that many people associate with that era, like shopping local and business supporting business. Tanya is excited to be a part of what she sees as a renewed commitment to making the downtown core a hub of activity.
Tanya spent years working in the service industry in various capacities but she found herself wanting to try something bold and new. Rather than going to work for someone else in the service industry as she had done in the past, she began thinking about opening her own business. Passionate about fashion, she saw a need for specialty brand clothing in Prince George, and as a certified aesthetician, she decided to combine both with a salon component. Tanya and her husband purchased their building in 2012 and began renovations. "From stripping the floors to pruning the rosebushes, being hands on with my business has been a labour of love," Tanya says. She enjoys chatting with neighbours strolling by and is thrilled to reunite with former classmates when they pop into the boutique. The challenges are exciting and have provided growth for Tanya. "I meet wonderful people, local and from out of town, and their appreciation is the reward for my efforts."
Though business ownership is demanding and often comes with long hours, she still enjoys time with her family, which also happens to include some canine members. When she's not relaxing with the family, she can often be found reading a good book or travelling to gather new ideas for her business. She also gardens in the summer, and interior decorating is a year-round hobby for Tanya. "If I'm not decorating my store I'm decorating my house or someone else's."
