Meet Sukrit, Mohinder and Vinay Parmar
Meet Sukrit, Mohinder and Vinay Parmar
As a girl, Sukrit Parmar had two big dreams. One was to become a teacher, and the second was to own her own business. After university, Sukrit went on to fulfill her teaching dream. When it came time to retire from teaching, it wasn't because she wanted to rest. It was time to pursue her second dream, and she and husband Mohinder Parmar purchased a business in Dawson Creek. After several years the couple sold their business and Sukrit, an avid cook, opened an Indian restaurant in Pouce Coupe. Then a few years later when the property next door to the restaurant came up for sale, the couple purchased it. The old building, which had once housed Pouce Coupe's first and very popular liquor store, was completely renovated and the couple and their son, Vinay Parmar, established the Sleep Inn Pouce.
Though the Parmar's restaurant is no longer open, Sukrit regularly hears from locals how much they loved the food, and people even request cooking lessons from time to time. The old restaurant building has been put to good community use, though. It now serves as the location for the Pouce Community Market. Sukrit and Mohinder say that Pouce Coupe residents have been just as supportive of their new business as they were of the restaurant. They often recommend the Sleep Inn to visiting family and friends, and local groups regularly book the facility for meetings and events. That is just the way Pouce Coupe residents are, Sukrit says. She believes that community members have made an intentional choice to support its own people's businesses. She also believes that local business owners have made extra efforts to offer more personalized service as a means of showing their gratitude.
Mohinder and Sukrit are thoroughly enjoying their retirement years and have no intention of taking it easy in the years to come. They and their son Vinay love working the motel and take pride in keeping it exceptionally clean and safe for guests. Outside of work, Sukrit still has a passion for cooking, something that she does often for her family and friends. The Parmars also enjoy spending time with their grandson.
