Meet Lorette Smillie
Lorette Smillie is a professional interior designer by trade who has an affinity for island living. Previously from Duncan, B.C. on Vancouver Island, Lorette moved to Haida Gwaii over a decade ago for a change of pace and to pursue new adventures. Having owned a bed and breakfast before, Lorette looked for a place with Guest House potential and located one through a friend that seemed to be perfect.
Being a B & B operator was a natural career choice for Lorette who loved to decorate but didn't want to keep her designs to herself. Sharing them with others through entertaining and hosting seemed to be a perfect way to do this. Few things give her more satisfaction in her work than hearing her guests comment on how beautiful their rooms are and how much they love the Masset Inlet property that houses Smillie's B & B. Many of her guests are regulars, and much of the B & B's new business is generated through personal referrals and positive comments left by visitors on online travel sites like TripAdvisor.
Running a B & B keeps Lorette busy, but she does appreciate that working for herself means that she's able to take time off when she wants to, such as for her annual trips back to visit family on Vancouver Island. She also keeps busy in her other job, as she is the drummer for "Outta the Blue," a popular Haida Gwaii dance band.
