Port Clements Museum
Visitors to Haida Gwaii must add a stop at the Port Clements Museum to their travel itinerary. The museum is run by the Port Clements Historical Society, made up entirely of local volunteers who have a passion for preserving and sharing Port Clements’ unique history. The museum features both outdoor and indoor displays, including its famous collection of machinery that helped to shape the town and power the industries that put Port Clements on the map. In fact, visitors can take in more than 2,000 artifacts that have played a significant role in shaping Port Clements’ past. Guests are invited to take an interpretive tour or browse the displays on their own. The Port Clements Museum is open daily from June until September each year and on weekends throughout the rest of the year.

Meet Port Clements Historical Society
The Port Clements Historical Society was formed by a group of like-minded locals who had a shared passion for researching the origins and history of the area as well as collecting and preserving artifacts from its past. Its work culminated in the opening of the Port Clements Museum in 1987, with the museum still operated largely through the efforts of faithful volunteers. It is also home to the Port Clements Visitor's Centre.
Historical Coordinator and board member Joan Hein is proud that there are so many volunteers who have made starting and running the museum possible. Almost every position within the organization is staffed by volunteers who do it simply because they love the community. They are very passionate about preserving and sharing the history of the town as well as the islands.
Joan shares the job of Historical Coordinator with her mom, Betty Dalzell, who Joan jokes is the brains of the partnership while Joan does the legwork. Betty was the visionary behind the museum and she was saddened to see local artifacts leaving the community because there was no place for them in Port Clements. So she began rounding up support for the idea of a local museum to preserve the town's history. Countless volunteer hours later, the museum was opened in 1987 and continues to be an important part of the community.
