Land and Sea Services
Take an outdoor adventure vacation of a lifetime with Land and Sea Services. Land and Sea Services provides customized fishing holidays in a family-oriented setting. Much more than a charter company or outfitter, Land and Sea Services caters to guests starting from the moment they arrive in Haida Gwaii. Guests will be met at the airport and transported to a cozy two-bedroom home, your base and comfortable accommodation for the duration of your visit. Settle in and then get ready for your ocean adventure. Land and Sea Services provides full outfitting services, including safety equipment and fishing gear, plus expert guide services to some of Haida Gwaii’s sweetest fishing spots. Guides will teach you how to fish for salmon, ling cod, halibut and more. After your fishing trip, your professional guides will teach you how to process your catch, which can be cooked and served the day it’s caught, or sent to a processing facility for packaging and shipping back home. For those who choose to eat their catch fresh, your guides will offer instruction on the proper cleaning and cooking and help you prepare an unforgettable fresh seafood meal, the best way to get the most flavour out of your Pacific catch. Guests may also opt for a guided tour of the waters around Haida Gwaii without fishing as well as land tours. Both land and sea excursions can be tailored to your interests, and guests are encouraged to visit some of the many cultural sites around Haida Gwaii. Three to seven-day packages are Land and Sea Services’ most popular options, but your vacation can be tailored to fit your specific needs and interests in seeing and experiencing the wonder and magic of Haida Gwaii.
Meet Michael & Barb Allen
Meet Michael & Barb Allen
Like many who relocate to Haida Gwaii, Mike and Barb Allen were looking for a bit of an adventure when they first came to the islands over two decades ago. Originally from the southern BC interior, the Allens fell in love with Haida Gwaii immediately. Mike, an avid outdoorsman, who also works as an EMT with BC Ambulance Services, found himself spending much of his free time fishing. He quickly got to know the waters around the islands. Soon he was entertaining friends and family, taking them out on his boat and showing them how to fish. It didn't take long for his friends to start asking him if he would take their friends out, and Mike realized that a business opportunity had fallen into his lap.
Today, the Allens keep a steady pace throughout the summer months, welcoming guests from all over BC and even other parts of Canada. Mike and Barb have a passion for entertaining and are very hands-on with all of their guests. They work side-by-side with visitors, helping them to prepare food (including their own catches) and sharing meals together. Every guest package includes at least one communal meal that's more like a seafood feast, and guests are shown how best to cook and serve whatever they've caught. "We love the coaching and mentoring aspect. The teaching experience is great," says Mike. He notes that they have a number of regulars who come back every season to fish and fill up their freezers for the coming year.
Both Mike and Barb have a deep appreciation for Haida Gwaii and for Port Clements in particular. "The people are wonderful," Mike says. "It's a big family here." As for the outdoors, Mike says "it's paradise here." When he's not on the water guiding visitors, he's enjoying the water on his own time from the vantage point of his kayak or surfboard or even underwater while scuba diving. On land, Mike and Barb spend a lot of time hiking the beaches and forests around the island.
