Meet Alan Lore
Meet Alan Lore
Alan Lore is a kayaking enthusiast who spends as much of his time as possible on the waters of Haida Gwaii. After starting a kayak outfitting and guide company several years ago, he realized that there was also a need for affordable accommodations in the Port Clements area. So in 2013, Alan opened Budgies Backpackers & Sight Seers so that visitors, like his kayaking clients, would have a place to stay, meet and socialize with other like-minded Haida Gwaii visitors.
Alan says that Haida Gwaii is his home and that the small town life is the only life for him. He's committed to the local economy and enthusiastic about the future of life and business in Port Clements. Starting and operating his own business was a way for Alan to contribute to the community he loves. He feels strongly supported by the community and does his best to reciprocate that support. Working for himself is personally satisfying, knowing that he is making his own future rather than working for someone else.
Alan spends a lot of time outdoors. If he's not kayaking (or leading others on a kayak excursion), he can often be found doing something else outdoors, like canoeing or playing sports. He also enjoys getting to know hostel guests and entertaining them by playing music and doing fire-juggling shows.
