Meet Mary Ellen Marshall, Micheal Williamson & Steven Allen Marshall
Daddy Cool's Public House, Mile Zero Dining Room and Liquor Store co-manager Mary Ellen Marshall has retired four times, but something about the island keeps drawing her back. It's not just the fact that her son needed someone to manage his business, or that Mary Ellen can't stand not being busy. Though she spends several months per year living abroad, she never misses summers on Haida Gwaii. "It's beautiful here," says Mary Ellen. "And the people are wonderful... so friendly. They make my job interesting."
Mary Ellen's son Steven Allen Marshall (not pictured), a professional musician, was looking for a business investment more than 20 years ago. Having grown up in Prince Rupert, Steven, Mary Ellen and the family had spent a lot of time on Haida Gwaii and Steven's step-father thought it would be a perfect place to invest because it was a wide-open market. So he bought the business, morphing it over the years to what it is today and also adding a taxi service which is run out of the same location. Today Steven devotes most of his time to his professional music career, as does his wife who does Tina Turner impersonations.
Micheal Williamson is the full-time, year-round manager of the business. Mary Ellen has joined Michael during the high tourist season for the last several years. The team is proud of the business and the changes they've made over the years to improve it and draw in new business. They know that running a small business, especially one on an island, has many challenges. But all of them work hard to meet those challenges head on by being innovative, offering excellent customer service, and serving dishes that taste amazing and use local ingredients, particularly seafood. Mile Zero Dining Room is well-known for its delicious food and Mary Ellen and Michael plan to maintain that great reputation.
