Meet Howard Broten & Lian Zhao

Howard Broten & Lian Zhao were looking for a business investment that would carry them through their retirement years. The couple was living in Burns Lake at the time and knew that they wanted to stay in the northern BC area. They began seeking out opportunities and ran across a listing for the Bulkley Valley Motel in New Hazelton. It turned out to be a perfect fit for their skill sets and their budget. It also seemed to be the ideal retirement business, so they bought it, moved to the community and took over the business in 2015. They immediately made a few upgrades to the facility and have more renovations planned for the future.

Howard and Lian felt immediately welcomed by their new community when they arrived. "It's easy to meet people here," says Howard. "Everyone is extremely friendly and open." The couple also appreciates the beauty of the area and the fact that it's an affordable place to live.

One of the reasons the motel was a good fit for the couple was that it would allow them to do one of the things they most like to do together: travel. Howard and Lian hope to spend time traveling during the motel's slow season. Another of their favourite pastimes is fishing. They spent most every weekend fishing when they lived in Burns Lake, and Howard is looking forward to fishing the rivers around the area of their new community.
