Meet Eduard Szasz

Eduard (Edi) Szasz and his business partner, John Lowe, are a dynamic duo propelled into success thanks to their extensive background in the restaurant industry. The two have known each other for over 20 years, having worked together in numerous kitchens over the years. Over the last few years, the culinary masters conjured up the dream of owning their very own restaurant, knowing their unique skill sets would compliment one another harmoniously.

Through a lot of blood, sweat and tears, Edi and John have brought their creative vision to life with the help of their loved ones and Haida Gwaii Community Futures, a non-profit organization that supports those with an entrepreneurial spirit in order to promote local economic development. In 2019 Blacktail was born, the fruits of their labour and the collaboration they had been waiting for. “We saw a niche that needed to be filled in Haida Gwaii,” says Edi. “We are giving people a place to go out to, to celebrate in and to enjoy time with friends.”

Edi has lived in Haida Gwaii since 2011, enjoying spending his time exploring the many beaches with his young daughter. John has been visiting the area since 2005 and has become infatuated with the people and surroundings. He's the true food nerd of this operation, spending much of his free time gathering freshly-caught seafood and other natural delights. Both Edi and John feel that it's the inclusive community that initially attracted them to the area. “The small town feel here is welcoming and caring,” shares Edi. “You feel like you're part of something!”
