Father and son, Vern and Desmond, chose to go into business together and opened CEI Computer Emporium in 2014. "We had another business in Dawson Creek," said Desmond, "and we chose to work together closely after I finished my business degree at the University of Victoria." Desmond knew Fort St. John was a prime location for their computer business due to their familiarity with the Peace Region, the proximity to a large number of business and an underserved market.
Desmond says that being in business with his Dad, Vern works because they have learned each others working styles and their respective domains of expertise. "We've learned over the years to ensure open lines of communication and we've practiced how to make successful joint decisions," said Desmond, "it helps considerably that we trust the judgement of one another."
Desmond grew up in Dawson Creek and now calls Fort St. John home. "Community pride is very prevalent here," Desmond said, "there is a sense of connection and purpose, it feels like you're able to have a positive impact." Desmond notes that Fort St. John is a safe place to live and work and is a good-sized community with all the amenities and lots of opportunities.
As a big outdoor enthusiast, Desmond enjoys being active outside when he is not running his business. Some of Desmond's favourite local sites are Beatton River Provincial Park, the community walking trails and Charlie Lake. When he finds the time, Desmond volunteers with the local North Peace Search and Rescue group and gets together with friends for basketball, soccer and mountain biking.
Vern, Desmond and the team at CEI Computer Emporium are proud to support the Fort St. John Association for Community Living, Peace Art Gallery Society, Energetic Edge, Taylor Tornado Pee Wee Hockey and NEAT (Northern Environmental Action Team).
