Meet Kristi Farrell

It's not unusual for Kristi Farrell to spend an hour at the grocery store even when she only came for a jug of milk. That's because grocery shopping and other errands tend to turn into social events because in a small town you can't help but run into people you know. Kristi doesn't mind, though. In fact, it is one of her favourite things about life in Prince Rupert. "I wouldn't have it any other way," she says. "I feel connected to my community. Whether we are friends, neighbours or acquaintances, there is a shared bond between community members experienced on a daily basis."

This prevailing sense of familiarity and smallness means that Kristi and her business partner/husband, John, are able to develop direct connections to their customers. Ultimately, it provides them with the opportunity to offer them better, more personalized service. Says Kristi of their customers, "we know who they and their family is, what their preferences are and even the times that they come in. We appreciate having direct feedback from our customers either in the restaurant, on the street or by word of mouth. Good or bad, we appreciate the feedback to try and improve our restaurant to make their experience enjoyable each time."

Kristi and John, who also own Cowbay Cafe, have operated Opa Sushi since 2005, after purchasing it from Kristi's brother-in-law. It was an opportunity that they couldn't pass up, and it was as much about the building as it was about the business. "Because it is an old historic net loft, it fit our cuisine perfectly," says Kristi. "The ambiance of the restaurant makes it feel warm and cozy on a rainy day, like a cabin in the woods. It is my second home." Kristi and John are proud of their staff, who they say are a team of like-minded people all working toward the same goal. "From the summer students to my long-term team, I am proud of providing a respectful, fun and fast-paced work environment that they feel an integral part of. The synergy experienced between us from conceptualizing and creating a dish to watching a customer appreciate our work is our ultimate reward."
